Platinum Group — Thin Markets, Careful Records
Platinum and palladium store like gold and trade in much thinner markets, which makes documentation and provenance disproportionately important.

A thin market is less forgiving
Gold and silver are so liquid that a bar with imperfect paperwork still moves easily. Platinum group metals trade in far smaller volumes, buyers are fewer and more particular, and a holding with weak documentation or an unfamiliar refiner can be genuinely awkward to sell.
The thinner market also affects timing. Selling a substantial platinum or palladium position may take longer or move the price against you in a way an equivalent gold position would not, which is worth understanding when the metal is being acquired rather than when it is being sold.
What matters more here
- Refiner recognition — a narrower list than for gold.
- Assay documentation retained and kept with the metal.
- Serial recording, as for gold.
- Form, since sponge and industrial forms are a different market from bars.
- Provenance, which buyers ask about more in thin markets.
Why these are held differently
The buyer base is smaller and more industrial, documentation and recognized form matter more, and fewer dealers will price a holding readily. Identification and provenance carry proportionally more weight than with gold.
That makes the storage record more consequential rather than less, because a holding that cannot be identified precisely is harder to sell in a market with fewer buyers willing to do the work.
How we handle it
- 01Inventory with refiner, form, weight and serials recorded.
- 02Documentation retained with the holding rather than filed separately.
- 03Allocated and segregated storage.
- 04Access by appointment.
- 05Release against the signed inventory.
Keep every piece of paper. In a thin market the documentation is a larger share of what makes a holding saleable than it is with gold, and reconstructing provenance years later is usually impossible.
Said plainly
Where we stop
We store investment-form metal. Industrial sponge, catalyst material and process intermediates are a different business with different handling and we do not take them.
Common questions
- Do you store platinum sponge?
- No. Investment-form bars and coins only. Industrial forms are a different business.
- Why does documentation matter more?
- Thinner market, fewer and more particular buyers. Paperwork is a larger share of saleability.
- Is it stored differently from gold?
- Handled the same way. The difference is how much the records matter at sale.
- Do you value it?
- No. We are custodians. Valuation is a separate profession.
